First, what means "Drinking the Kool-Aid" 

"Drinking the Kool-Aid" is an expression used to refer to a person who believes in a possibly doomed or dangerous idea because of perceived potential high rewards. The phrase often carries a negative connotation. It can also be used ironically or humorously to refer to accepting an idea or changing a preference due to popularity, peer pressure, or persuasion. In recent years it has evolved further to mean extreme dedication to a cause or purpose, so extreme that one would "drink the Kool-Aid" and die for the cause. The phrase originates from events in Jonestown, Guyana, on November 18, 1978, in which over 900 members of the Peoples Temple movement died. The movement's leader, Jim Jones, called a mass meeting at the Jonestown pavilion after the murder of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan and others in nearby Port Kaituma. Jones proposed "revolutionary suicide" by way of ingesting a powdered drink mix lethally laced with cyanide and other drugs which had been prepared by his aides.

Drinking the Kool-aid is an expression in English that is used a lot. It is a metaphor for brainwashing, accepting unrealistic or baseless ideas to the extreme. When I look at myself I drank a lot of Kool-aid. I believed everything from the beginning. And I was very quickly convinced that a "United World" by "us" would be a reality in my lifetime. 

Everything Chiara said was seen as truth and followed. How much Kool-aid did we drink. Sometimes I wonder how far we would have gone in following her, in doing everything she would have asked us to do. Brainwashing is not something you let happen consciously. No one joins a cult or high-demanding group voluntarily.

It is a slow process like a boiling frog. 
The boiling frog is an apologue describing a frog being slowly boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of sinister threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly.

I've read many books about cults and high-demanding groups and each one is bizarre in its own way. And with every one I could say, "How did people ever believe in those ideas?" But by now I know that this question cannot be put to any person who joins something like that. I believe in the goodness of people and so I believe everyone steps into something idealistically at the beginning.

But through "Love bombing", "Cognitive dissonance" and "Undue influence" you eventually come to accept everything from the group and start "drinking the Kool-aid" almost automatically.

Because:

• I started to believe that the "Ideal" was the only way the world could change.
• I started to believe that Chiara was the greatest "saint" of all time.
• Everything my responsible or zone-responsible said, I did without thinking.
• When I had a meeting with the Gen 4 or led a Word-of-Life group I told exactly what I heard and not once did I think to myself that I could have questions about it.

And I could tell so many other examples. And though that changed over time. I totally drank the Kool-aid in the early years and did everything as I was asked.

And certainly, we have never been asked to carry out an attack or to commit major crimes. But crimes were certainly there, tax fraud was one of them. And under the guise that everything was for the Kingdom of God, it was done.

We all drank the Kool-aid to some degree. And it's good to check with yourself what flavor that Kool-aid had in your life. Because that brings you one step closer to yourself and everything that has happened to you and what you have allowed yourself to do. To give it a place in your own history. We will have to deal with our own decisions and our own actions, even if that has been under the umbrella of authority of a Focolare Movement.

If anything, it helped me to understand the dynamic that I've been living in for so many years and I'm not now anymore. Thank God!

Innanzitutto, cosa significa "Bere il Kool-Aid"

"Drinking the Kool-Aid" è un'espressione usata per riferirsi a una persona che crede in un'idea forse condannata o pericolosa a causa di potenziali ricompense elevate percepite. La frase porta spesso una connotazione negativa. Può anche essere usato in modo ironico o umoristico per riferirsi all'accettazione di un'idea o al cambiamento di una preferenza a causa della popolarità, della pressione dei pari o della persuasione. Negli ultimi anni si è evoluto ulteriormente per indicare un'estrema dedizione a una causa oa uno scopo, così estremo che si potrebbe "bere il Kool-Aid" e morire per la causa. Bere il Kool-aid è un'espressione inglese molto usata. È una metafora del lavaggio del cervello, dell'accettazione estrema di idee irrealistiche o prive di fondamento. Quando mi guardo ho bevuto molto Kool-aid. Ho creduto a tutto fin dall'inizio. E mi sono convinto molto rapidamente che un "mondo unito" da "noi" sarebbe stato una realtà nella mia vita.

Tutto ciò che Chiara ha detto è stato visto come verità e seguito. Quanto Kool-aid abbiamo bevuto. A volte mi chiedo fino a che punto saremmo andati nel seguirla, nel fare tutto quello che ci avrebbe chiesto di fare. Il lavaggio del cervello non è qualcosa che si lascia accadere consapevolmente. Nessuno si unisce volontariamente a un culto o a un gruppo molto esigente.

È un processo lento come una rana bollente.

La rana bollente è un apologo che descrive una rana che viene lentamente bollita viva. La premessa è che se una rana viene messa improvvisamente in acqua bollente, salterà fuori, ma se la rana viene messa in acqua tiepida che viene poi portata lentamente a ebollizione, non percepirà il pericolo e verrà cotta a morte. La storia è spesso usata come metafora dell'incapacità o della riluttanza delle persone a reagire o essere consapevoli delle minacce sinistre che sorgono gradualmente piuttosto che all'improvviso.

Ho letto molti libri su culti e gruppi molto esigenti e ognuno è bizzarro a modo suo. E con ognuna potevo dire: "Come hanno fatto le persone a credere in quelle idee?" Ma ormai so che quella domanda non può essere posta a nessuno che si unisca a qualcosa del genere. Credo nella bontà delle persone e quindi credo che tutti entrino in qualcosa idealisticamente.

Ma attraverso "Love bombing", "Dissonanza cognitiva" e "Influenza Indebita" alla fine arrivi ad accettare tutto dal gruppo e inizi a "bere il Kool-aid" quasi automaticamente.

Perché:

• Ho iniziato a credere che "l'Ideale" fosse l'unico modo in cui il mondo potesse cambiare.
• Ho iniziato a credere che Chiara fosse la più grande "santa" di tutti i tempi.
• Tutto ciò che diceva il mio responsabile o responsabile di zona, l'ho fatto senza pensarci.
• Quando ho avuto un incontro con i Gen 4 o ho guidato un gruppo della Parola di Vita ho raccontato esattamente quello che ho sentito e non una volta ho pensato tra me che potevo avere delle domande al riguardo.

E potrei raccontare tanti altri esempi. E anche se questo è cambiato nel tempo. Ho bevuto totalmente il Kool-aid nei primi anni e ho fatto tutto quello che mi veniva chiesto.

E certamente non ci è mai stato chiesto di compiere un attentato o di commettere reati gravi. Ma i crimini c'erano certamente, la frode fiscale era uno di questi. E con la scusa che tutto era per il Regno di Dio, è stato fatto.

Abbiamo tutti bevuto il Kool-aid in una certa misura. Ed è bene verificare con te stesso che sapore ha avuto quel Kool-aid nella tua vita. Perché questo ti avvicina di un passo a te stesso e a tutto ciò che ti è successo e a ciò che ti sei permesso di fare. Per dargli un posto nella tua storia. Dovremo fare i conti con le nostre decisioni e le nostre azioni, anche se questo è stato sotto l'ombrello dell'autorità del Movimento dei Focolari.

Semmai, mi ha aiutato a capire la dinamica in cui ho vissuto tanti anni ed ora non lo sono più. Grazie a Dio!
