I came across this model from Steven Hassan, a cult expert. It is called the BITE model. BITE stands for: Behavior Information Thought Emotional. The 4 ways to control people in a cult.

If I am reading all the points it comes to mind how I was controlled through this entire time I was in the Focolare Movement. I can check many boxes I read in the long list Steven Hassan is writing.

In the following months I will try to unravel all the points I can apply to the Focolare Movement and what I have experienced.

The first chapter is: Behavior Control

And the first point is: Regulate an individual's physical reality

Early in my life as a gen (New Generation - the young people of the Movement) I was encouraged to come regularly to the Focolare first. When I was old enough I was asked if I didn't want to come and live in the Gen house with other Gen. That meant that I had to travel longer for my studies. But that didn't make up for the wonderful cohabitation with the other Gen. It meant I could interact less with my fellow townspeople because I had a longer commute per day.

In addition, I suddenly moved away from my family and therefore I saw them less.

Looking back now, I understand because of these changes I very soon came into the sphere of influence of the Focolare.

I gave up my volleyball because I could no longer participate in the training sessions and so that world fell away too. I started doing anything and everything with the Gen. We lived a few blocks from the Focolare and could always be found there. Within months I had a different life.

All'inizio della mia vita di Gen (Nuova Generazione - i giovani del Movimento) sono stato incoraggiato a venire regolarmente prima in Focolare. Quando ero abbastanza grande mi è stato chiesto se non volevo venire a vivere in casa Gen con altri Gen. Questo significava che dovevo viaggiare più a lungo per i miei studi. Ma questo non compensava la splendida convivenza con gli altri Gen. Significava che potevo interagire meno con i miei compaesani perché avevo un tragitto giornaliero più lungo.

Inoltre, improvvisamente mi sono allontanato dalla mia famiglia e quindi li ho visti meno.

Guardando indietro ora, capisco che a causa di questi cambiamenti sono entrato molto presto nella sfera di influenza dei Focolari.

Ho rinunciato alla mia pallavolo perché non potevo più partecipare agli allenamenti e così è caduto anche quel mondo. Ho cominciato a fare di tutto e di più con il gen. Abitavamo a pochi isolati dai Focolari e lì si poteva sempre trovare. In pochi mesi ho avuto una vita diversa.
