It was not what you should wear when Gen was imposed. At least not where I spent my Gen years but it was subtly encouraged.

I was always a bit alternative in my clothes before I got to know the movement but soon after I associated with the Gen I started to change my dress style. From never a dress or a skirt, I started wearing it now (my parents didn't know what they saw).

The Focolarine could be recognized from afar. In their over-the-knee dresses or skirts, their eternal tights and flats, their blouses or dresses closed high. At that time, there was no jewelry to wear, let alone make-up. And the hair?....... Most of them had short hair that didn't have a model or a cut in it. Some still have the same coup, only now a bit grayer.

And of course they didn't say at the entrance of a Focolare that the dress code was so and so. But you soon learned that it was considered pleasant if you wore certain clothes or not other clothes. And because you wanted to fit in, your clothes changed with the times and you became like everyone else.

I hated tights and the Focolarine even wore them in the summer!

My mother once gave me a nice blouse, but I wasn't allowed to wear it because it accentuated my body shape too much.

Once I was given a pair of shoes two sizes larger than my foot, but I had to wear them because they belonged to the "Providenza". Fortunately, they also broke very quickly......

How many times have I received something that I did not like at all, but the rest of the Focolare assured me that it was beautiful. Because sometimes there was no money to buy new clothes because the money had already been spent on something else.

When I later understood that at the same time beautiful expensive clothes were going to Chiara and her friends as gifts, I couldn't believe it. But that should be a separate chapter to talk about.

So was it imposed? No, not really, but you soon learned to conform to what everyone else was wearing. And so in the end what you wore was determined.

Cerchiamo di essere chiari prima. Lo stile di abbigliamento di Chiara e dei suoi "primi" amici è rimasto bloccato da qualche parte negli anni '50 / '60. Forse con gli anni è stato aggiunto un bel strato di accenti più moderni, ma è rimasto principalmente in quegli anni.

Camice a collo alto, gonne lunghe, sempre maniche e quasi sempre i vestiti un po' over-sized, perché le forme del corpo non si lasciavano vedere.

Non che veniva imposto quello che dovevi indossare quando Gen. Almeno non dove ho trascorso io i miei anni di Gen, ma è stato sottilmente incoraggiato.

Sono sempre stata un po' alternativa nei miei vestiti prima di conoscere il movimento, ma subito dopo essermi unita alle Gen ho iniziato a cambiare il mio modo di vestire. Da mai un vestito o una gonna, ho iniziato a indossarlo ora (i miei genitori non sapevano cosa vedevano).

Le focolarine potevi riconoscere da lontano. Nei loro abiti sopra il ginocchio o nelle loro gonne, nelle loro eterne calze e ballerine, nelle loro camicette o abiti chiusi alti. Una volta mi hanno regalato un paio di scarpe di due numeri più grandi del mio piede, ma ho dovuto indossarle perché appartenevano alla "Provvidenza". Per fortuna si sono anche rotti molto velocemente......

Perché dopo c'è stata anche la "Provvidenza". Quello che gli altri non portavano più arrivava in Focolare e poi cercavamo insieme chi poteva usarlo. Quante volte ho ricevuto qualcosa che non mi è piaciuto per niente, ma il resto dei Focolari mi ha assicurato che era bellissimo. Perché a volte non c'erano soldi per comprare vestiti nuovi perché i soldi erano già stati spesi per qualcos'altro.

Quando poi ho capito che contemporaneamente a Chiara e alle sue amiche andavano in regalo dei bei vestiti costosi, non ci potevo credere. Ma questo dovrebbe essere un capitolo a parte di cui parlare.
